Movie Bio : The first images from 2018’s “gritty” reimagining of Robin Hood have teased a new Sherwood Forest full of automatic weapons, fashionable battle armour and chic fascist-wear straight out of a Hunger Games reboot.
Starring Kingsman’s Taron Egerton and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, the film has been described as a dark, revisionist prequel to the historical story, with Deadline claiming in 2015 that the script had been likened to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
The first pictures from the film depict Egerton and Jamie Foxx as Robin and Little John, Eve Hewson (daughter of U2’s Bono) as Maid Marian and Ben Mendelsohn as a sharply-outfitted Sheriff of Nottingham – who appears to be backed up by an army of minions carrying weapons that look like machine guns.
Fifty Shades star Jamie Dornan is also in the cast, playing Robin’s brother Will Scarlet, and Australian comedian Ben Minchin is Friar Tuck.
And if you can’t help but notice the awkward visual similarities (chiseled blonde lead, grungy backdrops, lots of artisanal knitwear) to last year’s “gritty” reboot of King Arthur, one of the biggest flops of 2017, it wouldn’t be irrational: Robin Hood is scripted by Joby Harold, the British screenwriter who was one of three men tasked with bringing King Arthur to the screen, too.
An energetic Foxx previously described the film to Entertainment Weekly last year in unexpected terms, involving a comparison to Kathryn Bigelow’s ripped-from-the-headlines Iraq drama Zero Dark Thirty.
“It’s different,” he said. “The way they shot it was crazy, it looks like you’re watching Zero Dark Thirty. We’re shooting with our bows, but they computer-generated it so it’s rapid-fire, almost like an AK. I saw that and was like ‘Oh, they ain’t ready for this.'”
He also claimed that Taron Egerton was born to play the historic outlaw, adding: “He kills this sh–. He looks so great as Robin Hood, that f—— jawline. Good-looking motherf—–.”
